Lisa Hill is a highly successful, serial entrepreneur and marketer who has made millions for her clients, some of whom are brand names you would know from their constant presence on TV and in stores.

Lisa is also a strong supporter of women’s entrepreneurship and has been a major supporter of homeless veterans, anti-human trafficking efforts, and supporting those suffering with PTSD as a result of head injuries. That’s one of the great things about entrepreneurship — you get to pick the causes that mean the most to you, and you get to make meaningful contributions to those causes.

And one day, Hill got sick and tired of being sick and tired.

“I’m an extremely active person,” she says. “I’m was a runner. And I couldn’t get past my own health challenges. So I asked myself, as an entrepreneur, what problems are people like me facing every day, and how can we solve them? Specifically, what can we do about the toxic load that we face every minute of the day, often resulting in rapid aging and illness?”

Hill points out that we can encounter 400 toxic chemicals by the time we leave our home every morning. “And just what are they doing to us over a period of time?” Hill questioned.

“You can’t tell people to do one more thing, because that just creates more stress. If you tell them ‘you have to eliminate sugar,’ or ‘you have to eliminate this other thing’, they’re going to hear that advice as stressful and typically aren’t going to make a change.

“But I thought, what if you could help people make a simple change, like create a sleep environment that’s healthy and extremely comfortable, along with assisting the elimination of some of the toxins that we’re absorbing all night long? That seemed to be doable.” Hill’s own personal struggle to “sleep and sleep well” propelled her to explore all possibilities.

Hill has worked with silver for years and respects its remarkable properties. With this knowledge, she began the creation of “safe, functional fabric solutions” for home and travel.

“Silver has long been known as a natural anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral substance,” she says. “Years ago, soldiers used to put a silver coin in their canteens to keep the water from spoiling. People did research and they found out that it was a smart move. Silver isn’t just a precious metal — it’s something that impacts our health.”

So Hill went to work building a company offering pillows and bedding with fabrics infused with silver.

“Bacteria, fungi, and viruses do not like silver,” she says. “When you sleep on a pillow that has silver infused into the fabric, you’ve got something that’s safe, and you’re creating built-in peace-of-mind. With all of my traveling, I was concerned about the cleanliness of the pillows I was trying to sleep on.”

Hill examined the pillow industry and observed that most pillows are made of foam, which emits gas (VOC’s), which can contribute to allergies. “We also know that foam does not break down, adding to the enormous challenges in our landfills that our planet is facing today.”

“Think about a foam pillow emitting toxic gas while you sleep,” she says. “As a result, you have an increased toxic load, right under your head. On top of that, foam often times leaves the head hot and sweaty, which causes us to wake up unrested.”

So Hill fills her pillows with kapok, which she calls “nature’s cashmere,” a substance from the Amazon rainforest and different parts of Asia, from which pillows were made a century ago.

“Kapok has this beautiful capacity that is does not attract moisture, which is why the U.S. Coast Guard has used it in life preservers for years,” she says. “Kapok resists water, mold, and mildew, which means that it may reduce allergies. It’s moldable, comfortable, and luxurious. Best of all, we don’t have to cut down the tree. Kapok comes from a pod, and once a year it’s harvested, and then we use it here. Our pillows are actually adjustable — you can remove some of the kapok or add more, depending on what kind of firmness you want so it’s always the right pillow for you.”

Hill also makes an ergonomically designed travel pillow to support the cervical spine so one’s head is not propelled forward. Her company even makes a pet bed infused with silver.

“Sometimes your pet can smell bad,” Hill says. “It’s not because they mean to, but because the bacteria growth is increased. So we created a pet bed that’s not only very healthy for the pet, but assists to eliminate smells, making the pet and pet parent much happier and healthier.”

Hill contributes a portion of her earnings to the three causes that mean the most to her — homeless vets, anti-human trafficking, along with PTSD caused by head injuries. “We were wired to do good and to serve, however many just do not know what to do or how to do it. I will always create that platform to help people with each body of work I am part of.”

On a personal note, Hill has provided a discount code to support my Dana-Farber Boston Marathon run. If you go to her website, silveriteglobal.com, and use the code “Levin,” Hill will provide a 10% discount to you and will donate 10% of your purchase to my Dana-Farber Boston Marathon campaign. “My father passed away due to brain cancer and I know he would be proud of my contribution to Dana-Farber, along with finding solutions to leave the planet a better place than when I arrived.”

So you’ll sleep easier, and everybody wins.
